Group Project: Alterra Space voyager

by | Design

This project has been one of the most challenging and rewarding. I worked on this project with nine of my peers. Together we dreamt up this project, the deliverables and assets, the details, and the goals.

The goal of this project was to create a cruise for space. We had to invent different planetary destinations and excursions. As part of this project, we had to make this imaginary cruise marketable with a target audience, and assets travel agencies could use as selling points for our cruise. The assets we created range from posters, postcards, and brochures to a website and app.

As a member of this team, I contributed in a variety of ways. My biggest contributions were to ideate and create the posters, postcards, and brochures among others. The contribution I am the most proud of are the achievement badges I designed and illustrated to be used on the app to track excursions and experiences.

My favorite part was finding unique and simple ways to illustrate the activity associated with the badge. The most challenging part was creating excellent designs in monochromatic color schemes. Before each badge was earned it would be displayed in the app in a monochromatic color scheme and then once earned would be illuminated to the color scheme associated with that planet. Each planet had a limited color scheme. Figuring out how to design icons that had such limited colors while still creating contrast and hierarchy was challenging but I am very proud of my results.

The two illustrations on the left are the brochure cover art for the brochures created for each planet and the excursions associated with that planet. I created these two brochure covers, and I really enjoyed the challenge of creating a monochromatic design with enough contrast to make the illustrations engaging.

With five brochures total, we wanted to create some way to display them above is that point of purchase display, the letters would be cutouts at the top and the brochures would set in pockets affixed to the front.

Planet Poster Process

Each planet had a poster and postcards. I worked a lot on the Amanzi Planet poster. this planet was our water planet, and one of the excursion options was to swim with the sea creatures on this planet. I wanted to show that in this poster.

I went through several iterations of this poster and in the end, my art director really liked the idea of swimming in the underwater caves on this planet but felt the sea creature was too scary, and felt some changes were needed.
